Bedruthan Steps

Bedruthan Steps

Wowee! I'd wanted to go and explore this place for a while and when I did my breath was taken away. I'm afraid the steps have eroded and I didn't attempt to get down onto the beach (this time) The view laid out before me was outstanding, the presence of those great rocks standing patiently waiting against the inevitable slow destruction of the sea.  I knew I wanted to attempt in my own way to put it down on paper. Starting with a few on the spot sketch book scribbles and lots of photos. Next a plan, for the composition....

Porthmoina Cove, Bosigran

Porthmoina Cove, Bosigran

This print began it's story on the 10th January when I saw these rocks for the first time. I went back a few times scrambling up and down the banking to get the photo i wanted with the right composition. I worked out my size and plan as a pencil drawing. Then flipped it and transferred it onto the lino. First cut - everything I want to keep white, which was the birds on the rocks and some white foam on the sea. I printed a very pale blue. next I cut out water detail and printed a second pale...

Two Tree Studies

Two Tree Studies

Two photographs I took earlier this year, both have been waiting in my head to become prints. The Loe, Porthleven, Cornwall and a tree lined path on Clapham Common. From November and July. Two quite different images I wanted to figure out how, to translate them into prints. The Loe seemed as if it would be quite straight forward, in that it was a nice black detail to cut and print over the water and sky. Clapham seemed all light and impressionistic and I wasn't quite sure how I was going to tackle it. One I thought would be tight and...

Loch Fyne, Ben Vorlich

Loch Fyne, Ben Vorlich

My parents used to live in Crinan on the west coast of Scotland. The drive up and down along the loch sides was beautiful. Driving back home one evening in June 2018 it was so gorgeous I just had to stop and take pictures. So this one has been sitting in the back of my mind for a while waiting to be cut. I thought it was perfect because of the contrasts but wasn't sure I could capture that light on the back mountain. The drawing on the lino an idea of the white bits i want to cut out...

Portheras Cove

Portheras Cove

My inspiration, a photo I took one early evening mid July. I love the colours and the way the water is running down the beach away from you into the sea,  making all those crazy water patterns. This is a reduction cut and a limited edition of 8.  First thing I did was flip the photo so I could copy it onto the lino. The image reverses back onto the paper when printed so then it's the right way round. This is my basic plan.  Next I marked in white pencil what I wanted to cut out first. This is what will...
